What does it feel like?! Contrary to popular belief you never lose consciousness in the state of hypnosis. You are always vaguely aware where you are but can transport yourself in your subconscious mind into any situation or circumstance. The state of hypnosis on its own cannot cure anything, it is purely an access to the subconscious mind and it is the experience, training and competence of the hypnotherapist that is all important. In any hypnotherapy session at least half the time is spent at a conscious level, understanding and discussing the different avenues to take to deal with the problems. A light state of hypnosis is usually all that is necessary for treatment. It is a wonderful feeling of relaxation, comfort and warmth. Quite often patients say when they come round that they didn’t want to waken, as it was so relaxing and pleasant. However, in actual fact, they didn’t go to sleep at all. Hypnosis is the halfway stage between sleep and waking. The conscious mind relaxes but the subconscious mind stays alert, taking in what is being said by the hypnotherapist. Since hypnotherapy works mainly on the subconscious mind, it reaches parts of the mind and body other agents can’t. Occasionally patients are unconvinced that they have in fact been in hypnosis. They expected to have zonked out and heard nothing. Instead they state that they haven’t been in hypnosis, they only closed their eyes to go along with the therapist and could have opened them at any time, could have sat up at any time, remembered everything that was said and could hear all the outside sounds. These are the exact feelings one has in therapeutic hypnosis. Patients sometimes ask to be put into a deeper state, whereas it is they themselves who are responsible for the depth they achieve – the therapist just guides them.
